More retailers are sourcing reusable bags and packaging outside China. Vietnam is the rising hub, but it is still harder to navigate. Here are five suppliers that make the move easier.
The migration of manufacturing out of China is no longer quiet. In 2024, US imports from Vietnam reached $136.3 billion, up 19.2 percent in a single year, according to US Census Bureau data. A 2024 AlixPartners survey of supply-chain executives found they are aiming to cut China’s share of their sourcing by about 35 percent, and they named Vietnam as one of the countries most likely to absorb that shift.
For reusable and sustainable packaging, Vietnam has become the rising power. The country’s plastics sector, which includes woven, non-woven and recycled bags, exported about $5.2 billion in products in 2023 and was on track for roughly $5.5 billion in 2024, with the United States, Japan and South Korea as its top buyers, according to the Vietnam Plastics Association.
There is just one catch. Vietnam is still harder to source from than China.
China spent two decades building the machinery that makes sourcing easy: vast online marketplaces, English-speaking sales teams, and thousands of factories a buyer can compare in an afternoon. Vietnam is not there yet. Many of its best suppliers are smaller, less visible online, and harder to vet from the outside. Buyers who try to switch often lose weeks just finding companies they can trust.

The shift to Vietnam is real and accelerating, but the country rewards buyers who do their homework. Start with suppliers that hold the certifications your market requires, such as GRS for recycled content and FSC for paper. Ask for a physical sample before any bulk order.
