COMMUNITIES

In Cambodia, many families still face fragile living conditions despite a decade of remarkable progress. Millions remain vulnerable and under the poverty line of 2.75$ per day, particularly in coastal areas and informal settlements.

For many, waste management is a luxury they can’t afford, leading to high plastic leakage into the environment.

It is in this context that TONTOTON partners with local communities to provide sustainable waste management solutions and create dignified work opportunities to prevent plastic at source.

TTT Communities
TONTOTON’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is located in outskirt Sihanoukville, offering easy access to connect with the surrounding coastal communities of Klaing Leu, Phum Thmey, Tumnop Rolork, and more communities around Cambodia’s coastlines.

It Takes a Village to Clean a Village

TTT Communities

TONTOTON’s Community team identifies potential areas of plastic leakage, meets with families and independent waste pickers, and offers them the opportunity to join the Community Barrier.

Each family receives a segregation kit and instructions to sort plastic from their households and collect it from the village. Independent waste collectors receive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and training on collection methods, materials, and safe working conditions while working in the environment.

By working with both, we can close the loop of plastic leakage into the oceans.

TTT Communities

By partnering with local Child Protection NGOs, we identify vulnerable families and introduce to join the Community Barrier program.

Through the collaboration, vulnerable families with children not only gain stable additional income but also contribute to cleaner and healthier environments, reinforcing the social value of local environmental action.

We also ensure no child labor involved, and all the children of these families that we work with, will have access to quality education and basic social support services.

Community Support Projects

We upcycle plastic waste and turn it into opportunities for local communities.

In our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) , collected plastic is transformed into durable boards that can be used to build and renovate. With these boards, we support projects such as classroom construction and home improvements, in collaboration with local NGOs according to community needs.

TONTOTON’s house renovation program plays a major role in addressing the urgent needs of the local independent waste collectors and households. Using the plastic they collect, we manufacture durable boards to rebuild and repair homes: providing families with safer, more comfortable, and longer-lasting living spaces.
